Hey there! I'm Melody.
A Narrative Designer & Writer
I hold a B.A. in Interactive Entertainment from the University of Southern California, where the game design program has been named #1 in North America by the Princeton Review nearly every year since 2010. I've loved games ever since my dad got me hooked on World of Warcraft when I was young. Growing up, I always thought I'd pursue the engineering side of things, but I ultimately discovered that storytelling was my greatest passion.
A big lesson I've learned in my time as a game developer is that being a good narrative designer means caring about the work of other disciplines, too. At USC Games, I had the opportunity to learn about nearly every aspect of development from sound design, to engineering, to 3D modeling, business, and more. Knowing even just a little bit about each of these areas has made me more well-rounded and facilitated much smoother cooperation with teammates over the years.
At USC, I was a member of EscapeSC, the school's premier escape room club where we designed, playtested, and gamemastered online and in-person escape rooms. You can see some of the projects I worked on as part of EscapeSC on the Other Work page. I was also a player and gamemaster for Trojan Adventuring Party (TAP), a TTRPG club where I most frequently played D&D 5e. I GMed two full campaigns with TAP and was a player in three more. In addition to participating EscapeSC and TAP, I was a student leader of Progressive Christians @ USC and a member of the Makers of Entertaining Games Association (MEGA). I once also had the opportunity to give a talk on narrative design for the Asian Pacific Cinema Association, which you can view here!
As for hobbies, I enjoy creative writing and screenwriting (which I suppose is kind of work, but kind of not). I'm in the process of writing a feature length screenplay, and I'm also working on a series of fantasy novels with one of my best friends. As a game developer, I'm also legally obligated to enjoy games; some of my favourites are Death's Door, Apex Legends, Star Wars: KOTOR, and The Last of Us. I also enjoy watching Critical Role, RWBY, and drum corps/indoor percussion shows.
